Naoto Shimoda is General Manager of Digital Strategy Department at SMFG (Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group), where he leads group-wide initiatives on digital assets. He is passionate about modernizing money and finance through the use of blockchain and AI. Prior to his current role, he accumulated over 30 years of policy-making experience at the Bank of Japan (BoJ) and the Ministry of Finance (MoF). He held a range of senior leadership positions, including Deputy Director General of Payments Department, Director of International Department, Head of Basel Banking Supervision Division, and Head of APAC Market Research at the BoJ, as well as Director for International Financial Affairs at the MoF. He also served as a member of the CPMI (Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures), the G7 Digital Payment Experts Group, the FSB Financial Innovation Network, and the BIS–Central Banks CBDC Coalition. He holds a degree in Law from Hitotsubashi University and studied Computer Science at Harvard University.
