Matthew Solomon
Partner
Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP
Matthew Solomon represents corporate and individual clients in some of their most challenging government-facing civil and criminal investigations and litigations. He leverages his high-level government experience, subject matter expertise, and trial acumen as a former federal prosecutor and SEC enforcement official to achieve superior results for his clients. He regularly practices before criminal and regulatory authorities, including the SEC, DOJ, CFTC, FINRA, and State Attorneys General. He also has experience with cross-border investigations and advocacy to foreign regulators across a broad variety of jurisdictions. He maintains an active commercial litigation practice as well, with a specialty in securities and other private civil litigation related to government actions. He has first-chaired dozens of bench and jury trials, and has served as lead trial counsel in multiple complex federal civil cases – the last two resulting in full dismissals for his clients in high profile cases. He has received several awards in government and the private sector in recognition of his litigation prowess. Most recently, He was named a Law360 MVP in 2024 and a Litigator of the Week in 2023 by The American Lawyer. He is ranked by Chambers in three separate categories: Securities Regulation and Enforcement, White-Collar Crime & Investigations, and Crypto Asset Disputes. Prior to joining Cleary, He spent several years as the SEC’s Chief Litigation Counsel. In that role, he supervised all litigated matters conducted by the SEC’s 150-attorney national trial unit. Before joining the SEC, he served as the Chief of the Fraud Unit and an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the 350-lawyer U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. He began his legal career as an Honors Program trial attorney in the DOJ’s Criminal Division. [Matt received his law degree, magna cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center, where he won several academic awards. He attended Wesleyan University for college, and graduated with High Honors.]
